Canada Wide Science Fair

2017 Canada Wide Science Fair:

The 2017 Canada Wide Science Fair (CWSF 2017) was held in Regina, Saskatchewan 14-21 May 2017. Team Kingston included Arjun Devnani for his project ‘Piezo Power (Energy Harvesting)’, Cameron Smith for his project ‘What Lurks in Your Water?’, Matthew Pilkey for his project ‘Could taking vitamins be bad for you?’, Keiran Barr for his project ‘Nicotinamide: Novel Skin Cancer Chemoprevention’ and Evan Sharma for his project ‘MMO Cow: How microbiome changes can lower methane emissions from livestock’.  Cameron attends Kingston Collegiate & Vocational Institute and the other finalists all attend Calvin Park Public School. At this year’s competition, the following awards were won by these Kingston students: Matthew Pilkey:  Silver Excellence Award. Keiran Barr:  Gold Excellence Award; Health Challenge Award. and Evan Sharma: Gold Excellence Award; Agriculture Challenge Award; Canadian Sustainable Agriculture Award.

 

2016 Canada Wide Science Fair:

The 2016 Canada Wide Science Fair was held in Montreal, Quebec in May 2016. Five Best of Fair winners from FLASF 2016 were sent to this national competition. Team Kingston included Imogen Lawford-Wickham (T1D Mouthguard), Kaamraan Islam (Decr3easing Carcinogens in Grilled Chicken Using Varous Marinades), Evan Sharma (Poopalicious: Shifting the Microbiome with FMT), Aidan Baksh (An Inexpensive Medical Training Aid for Pericardiocentesis) and Lydia Elbatarny (Caged In: A Novel Approach to Metal Extraction). The following awards were won at CWSF 2016:
Imogen Lawford-Wickham: Special Award- S.M. Blair family foundation award ($500 cash and certification); Excellence Award-Junior level, Silver medal

Lydia Elbatarny: Excellence Award- Intermediate level, Bronze medal

EvanSharma: Excellence Award- Junior level, Bronze medal

 

2015 Canada Wide Science Fair:

The 2015 Canada Wide Science Fair was held in Fredericton, New Brunswick in May 2015. Five students from the FLASF 2015 were sent to this all expenses paid national competition. Team Kingston included FLASF Best of Fair winners:

Lydia Elbatarny (Bubbling with Energy):Excellence Award – Junior Bronze Medal, Western University Scholarship - $1000 Entrance Scholarship;

Kaamran Islam (Green Oil: Improving the Extraction Efficiency of Bitumen from the Oil Sands):Excellence Award – Junior Bronze Medal, Western University Scholarship - $1000 Entrance Scholarship;

Daniel Levin (SMART Car Seat): Carlson Wagonlit Award: $500, Excellence Award – Junior Bronze Medal, Western University Scholarship - $1000 Entrance Scholarship; Nisha Gill (Teen Perceptions and Personas): Excellence Award – Junior Bronze Medal, Western University Scholarship - $1000 Entrance Scholarship;

Dylan Layton-Mathews (Gone With The Wind: An Experimental Apparatus For Building Response To Wind).

 

2014 Canada Wide Science Fair:

The 2014 Canada Wide Science Fair was held in Windsor, Ontario in May 2014. Five students from the FLASF 2014 were sent to this all expenses paid national competition. Team Kingston included FLASF Best of Fair winners: Alex Chan, Nathann Pilkey, Dylan Layton-Mathews, Anez Poulos and Lillian Crowder, all students at Calvin Park Public School. At the CWSF:

Alex Chan and Nathan Pilkey won an Excellence Award – Junior Gold Medal, $700 cash & certificate, Challenge Award – Energy – Junior winner, $500 cash & certificate and Western University Scholarship - $4000 Entrance Scholarship for their project, “Peltier Power: Scavenging Heat From Solar Panels to Generate Electricity”.

Dylan Layton-Matthews won an Excellence Award – Junior Silver Medal, $300 cash & certificate and a Western University Scholarship - $2000 Entrance Scholarship for his project, “A Thaw-ful Situation: A Freezing Apparatus for Experimental Permafrost Failure.

 

2013 Canada Wide Science Fair:

The 2013 Canada Wide Science Fair was held in Lethbridge, Alberta in May 2013. Five students from the 2013 FLASF were sent to this all expenses paid national competition. Team Kingston included FLASF Best of Fair winners:Dawson Ethier, Cole Gouveia, Cove McConnell, Jack Lott and Dylan Layton-Matthews. At the CWSF:

Jack Lott, Calvin Park Public School, won a Bronze medal (including a certificate, $100 cash and qualified for a $1000 entrance scholarship to Western University) for his project "Prozone".

Dylan Layton-Mathews, Calvin Park Public School, won a Bronze medal (including a certificate, $100 cash and qualified for a $1000 entrance scholarship to Western University) for his project "Hull of a Good Design: Designing a test apparatus and testing hull designs for the optimal hull"

 

2012 Canada Wide Science Fair:

Congratulations to the 2012 FLASF Best of Fair winners who attended the 2012 Canada Wide Science Fair in Charlottetown, PEI! All four participants won awards at the national level.

Cove McConnell was presented with a gold medal for excellence for his project "Tubercles: The Leading Edge of Wing Design." His prize included $1,500 as well as a Blackberry playbook. Cove also qualified for a $4,000 entrance scholarship to Western University.

Partners Jack Lott and Alex Drover earned a silver medal for "Pro.Tech.Neck: The Future of Hockey Neck Guards." The duo was awarded $700 as well as the Canadian Society for Senior Engineering Innovation Award worth $500. Both Jack and Alex also qualified for a $2,000 entrance scholarship to Western University.

Kingston Collegiate & Vocational Institute (KCVI) Grade 11 student Brandon Whitley brought home a silver medal for excellence for "The Living Wall: An Educational Innovation." Brandon's project also qualified him for entrance scholarships to a number of Canadian universities, for a total value of $8,500.
